Could the Rich Man (“Dives”) Repent and be Raised to a Resurrection of Life?

“I have long searched with anxious solicitude for a text in the Bible which should even seem to favor the idea of a future probation. I cannot find it.”-Moses Stuart quoted by Foster, F. H. (1889). The Eschatology of the New England Divines. Bibliotheca Sacra, 46(181), 118.

The Confirmation Bias of Moses Stuart is so strong he could not see the many scriptures where repentance in Hell is either presumed, implied or explicitly stated: [Hover your mouse over these scripture references to easily view their “pop ups”]

1Sam. 2:6-10; 2Sam. 22:5-7; Ps. 16:10-11; 30:3; 49:15; 56:14; 68:18-20; 71:19-24; 86:13; 88:1-18; 107:10-15; 116:3-9; 118:17-18; 139:8; Isa. 4:4; 26:19-21; Lam. 3:25; Hos. 13:14; Jon. 2:2-6; Mic. 7:7-9; Zec. 9:11; John 5:28-29; 1 Pt. 3:18-22; 4:6; 1 Cor. 5:5; Eph. 4:8-10; Heb. 9:27-28; Rev. 20:11-15

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. (Jon. 2:2 KJV)

I called on Your name, O LORD, From the lowest pit (0953 בּוֹר bowr). (Lam. 3:55 NKJ)

1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit (0953 בּוֹר bowr), out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
(Ps. 40:1-3 KJV)

As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit (0953 בּוֹר bowr) wherein is no water. (Zec. 9:11 KJV)

For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. (1 Pet. 4:6 NKJ)

27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. (Heb. 9:27-28 NKJ)

13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. (Rev. 20:13-15 NKJ)

28 “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice
29 “and come forth– those who have done good, to the resurrection of life
, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. (Jn. 5:28-29 NKJ)

Clearly, we must revisit the parable of the Rich Man in Hades. What are the indications “Dives” could hear the voice of the Son of God while still in the grave, and then choose to do good? Then when Hades and Death are emptied out on Judgment Day, he would rise to “the resurrection of life”.

22 “So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 “And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 “Then he cried and said,`Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’
25 “But Abraham said,`Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
26 `And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want (2309 θέλω thelo) to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ (Lk. 16:22-26 NKJ)

The redeemed would not earnestly desire (2309 θέλω thelo cp. Lk. 8:20) to aid impenitent enemies of God to whom such grace would be useless:

Let grace be shown to the wicked, Yet he will not learn righteousness; In the land of uprightness he will deal unjustly, And will not behold the majesty of the LORD. (Isa. 26:10 NKJ)

Therefore, Dives was not an impenitent enemy of God and that is confirmed by the total absence of any Cursing of God or Abraham.

Although Dives could not cross the great gulf while in Hades, he leaves that gulf behind when Hades is emptied out and all in it rise to be judged.

ONLY those NOT found written in the book of life are cast into the lake of fire:
